Chanel Johnson

Chanel is a senior at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis majoring in mechanical engineering and graduates December 2015 and holds a degree in mathematics from Spelman College.  While at Spelman, she was part of the first all-African American women robotics team, the Spelbots, and competed internationally in the RoboCup, an artificial intelligence competition.  Chanel’s interest in the automotive industry started while interning with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  She worked on a case with the safety defect investigation team and the experience provided her with an understanding of the safety regulations to be followed to ensure the safety of our citizens.

Chanel writes “I constantly strive for excellence and am very committed to making my time as productive and beneficial as possible.”  She stays driven and focused on her goals while staying involved in the community having tutored for local middle schools within the greater Atlanta area and at the Indianapolis public schools.  She also chairs fundraisers for AIDS Walk every year to help give back on a global scale.  Chanel hails from Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
