Amy Sun

Awarded $2,500 on 8/21/2012

Amy is a freshman attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She has always wanted to be an engineer like her mom.  She participated in various programs while in high school including the Kettering LITE program, a six month Ford Motor Company High School Science and Technology program where she explored the emerging technologies, recent innovations, attended lectures, and other hands on activities, and did a high school summer internship at Ford Motor Company. After the internship, she was informed by her supervisor at Ford, that the user-friendly tool she developed to incorporate the relationships for engine dyno and vehicle calibration had an ongoing usage.  Amy experienced accomplishment knowing her research was used in a real life application and it solidified her determination to become an engineer.

She is a National Merit Scholarship finalist, National AP Scholar, and was ranked 3rd for Metro Detroit Science and Engineering Fair, 1st for National Society of Professional Engineers, 1st for Yale Science and Engineering Association, 4th at Michigan Science and Engineering Fair, Kettering, and United States Air Force Outstanding Science and Engineering Fair Project Award.

In sports, Amy is a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has won top placements in various tournaments at the local and national levels. She received all-state honors in varsity swimming, broke the DCDS school record in two events, and she was the winner of the student-athlete award on the DCDS Varsity Women’s Ice Hockey Team in 2010. Amy also won the 2010 and 2011 North American Violin Concerto Championship, the MMEA Honors Composition Concert for String Orchestra, was invited to conduct the winning composition at the Michigan Music Conference, and was a member of several local and statewide youth orchestras.  Amy founded the Little Stars Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization of young musicians to perform and send gifts to local nursing homes and provided free violin workshops annually. Amy’s home is located in Canton, MI.
