Ms. Gold Darr

Awarded $2,500 on 11/15/2005

Miss Gold Darr, a 14-year-old, has just entered a 3-2 engineering program offered by Mary Baldwin College’s Program for the Exceptionally Gifted. Mary Baldwin offers a residential program for exceptionally gifted girls to go to college instead of high school and live among their peers. After three years at Mary Baldwin, Gold will transfer to UVA to complete her engineering degrees and will graduate with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in engineering (at age 19!). Since she was four years old, Gold has been determined to make a car that flies and she is single-mindedly pursuing this ambition. In her first semester in college she is taking 19 credit hours, including a directed study in applied mathematics, and is working on a paper on GPS systems to help pilot her flying car. In addition to her class work, Gold was invited by her professor to participate in a math research project and present the results at a conference. She is also active in the college choir.
