Ms. Irene Zhang
Awarded $2,500 on 11/15/2005
Irene Zhang attends MIT and is majoring in electrical and computer engineering. She spent her first summer internship in Beijing, where she worked with an international team researching more efficient solutions to the traditional diesel engine, to try to eliminate its pollution problems. Her most recent internship was with Cummins, where she worked with electrical engineers on hardware applications for the auto industry. This semester she is working with a group doing research on voice recognition that she believes has potential for the auto industry, as it has already been used in airplanes. Irene heard about the AWAF scholarship from an aunt who works at Chrysler and both her parents work in the auto industry, so she grew up hearing about cars and engines and engineering seemed like a natural choice for her.
