Mikayla is in her second year at Lake Area Technical Institute, Watertown South Dakota, and nearing completion with an Associate Degree in Entrepreneurship. She plans to continue her education with a degree in Diesel Technology. Mikayla will learn all areas of mechanics such as welding, small and large engines, and hydraulics. With high labor shortages of skilled workers in South Dakota, her goal is to own an automotive repair business, specializing in diesel mechanics. Her business plan was entered into a competition and has netted potential investors. Plans are underway for securing the land, building, and the equipment. Mikayla has held various jobs in agriculture and farming, retail, service, and basic electrical installation. She is a trainer of reining and all-around performance horses, teaches riding lessons, and volunteers in her community; most recently in the Polar Plunge event where Lake Area Technical Institute raised $3,000 for Special Olympics. Her hometown is Milbank South Dakota. The scholarship was sponsored by Cox Automotive.
